Vaman

Vaman Purana, When Shiva cut off Brahma’s head, it got stuck to his palm and wouldn’t come off. Shiva went asking for help to Vishnu and explained how Brahma’s head had got stuck to his hand (saying, “ I have now become mahakapalika”) . Vishnu lifted his left arm and asked Shiva to strike it with his Trishul. Shiva did what was asked, and three streams of blood sprang out of the left arm of Vishnu. The first stream of bloodshot up into the sky and became stars. The second stream of blood fell to the earth it was received by sage Atri, and a son Durvasa was born to Atri, (who was supposed have the traits of Shiva and was called ‘tiger’ among sages ( munishardul). And the third stream of Vishnu’s blood fell into the kapal in Shiva’s hand and thus he was released from the head of Brahma.

Liberated

Forever do I bow down to Brahma, Vispu and Mahesvara by whom this extremely mysterious Cosmic Egg has been established. Vi$flu’s world and Rudra’s world are glorified as exterior to this. Only Brahma is competent to describe it and not people like us. It is here that the liberated people performing holy rites of Hari and Hara always go.

ashtateertha

1.  Veda Pushkarini:  Sri Maha Vishnu came to this world as Dattatreya, in one of his incarnations in Tretha Yuga. Assuming the Four Vedas to be his students, he taught the four Vedas to them, on the banks of this lake. The lake is therefore called Veda Pushkarini. This lake and Paridhanashila Kshetra are neighbors.       Dhanushkoti: Although this is not one of the Ashta Thirtha, this is a beautiful place to visit. On top of a hill, on a vertical rock there are tunnel like formations. This tunnel was formed when Sri Rama shot arrows to get water for Seetha to bathe. There are three tunnels, as he shot three times. This is a clear water pond in the rock. There are also carvings of Seetha, Rama and Lakshmana in the rock and this is a place worth sightseeing.

2.  Yadava Thirtha: River ‘Yadavi’ flows by the side of this lake. A king by name ‘Yadavendra’ performed Yaga on the bank of this lake and attained Moksha.

3.  Palasha Thirtha:  Palasha Thirtha is situated to the north of Darbha Thirtha. The name is because there a large number of Muttuga trees here. The sons of Vasishta Maharshi, who were cursed by Viswamitra Maharshi, were cured off the curse after bathing in this lake.

4.  Darbha Thirtha: Dattatreya used the Darbha grass grown on the banks of this lake for his daily Pooja needs. Therefore the name Darbha Thirtha is in vogue. It is said that, anyone dying holding this Darbha, will attain Moksha. Shandilya Maharshi recited the Pancharathra Shastras on the banks of this lake, needed for propitiating God (Bhagawan Aradhana).

5.  Padma Thirtha: This is located to the North of Palasha Thirtha. Sanathkumar used the lotus flowers grown in this lake for his daily Sri Narayana Pooja. One who wears the lotus beads from this lake will attain Moksha.

6.  Maitreya Thirtha: This is located to the North of Kalyani. Parashara Maharshi preached Vishnu Purana to Maitreya here. South Indians call this ‘Maitreya Thirtha’ after the student’s name and North Indians call this ‘Parashara Thirtha’ after teachers’ name.

7.  Narayana Thirtha: Narayana Thirtha is to the North of Maitreya Thirtha. Those who are cremated near this lake attain Moksha. Vishnuchitta a bachelor did penance on its bank. Sri Narayana appeared before him and blessed him with Moksha. ‘Nayana Kshetra’ is carved like a cave in the rock above Narayana Thirtha.

8.  Vaikunta Ganga: In Trivikrama incarnation of Vishnu, his feet touched Brahma Loka. Brahma washed Vishnu’s feet with the water from his jug (Kamandala) The flowing water became River Ganga. Others in heaven (Nityamuktas in Vaikunta) washed the feet with water from River Virija. A drop from that fell at the North of Narayana Giri and this is Vaikunta Ganga. Bhaktisara (Tirumazhishai Alwar) attained Moksha after doing penance on the banks of this river. This is a place of tourist attraction. A pond is formed by water flowing from the hillock and further flows and collects in cradle like pond. It further flows and falls down hill into another pool. This is therefore named Cradle Pond (Tottila Madu). The view of flowing river with surrounding hill range is a beautiful sight. There is a carving of Vishnu depicting Brahma and others washing his feet. Thus the Ashta Thirtha here has importance in attaining Moksha.

A carnival is held at the time ‘Ashta Thirtha’,

everywhere

Indeed, during the celebration of Diwali, the Guru assumed seven identical forms and graced the houses of all the devotees in the seven places simultaneously, with his presence in his eighth form, he stayed at hismuth. The omnipresent Lord stayed for five long days in all the eight places! The seven devotees again visited the muth in the holy month of Kartik and they were telling one another that Sree Guru had graced their respective houses during the festivities of Diwali. The disciples at the muth intervened and said, 'In fact, the Lord had not left the muth at all during the five days celebration. He graced us all by his presence here. Consequently, every one of them accused every other of telling lies. When the argument drew the attention of Sree Guru, he said, 'Do not dispute among yourselves. I am everywhere!' Everyone was struck dumb with amazement and joy. Together, they all sang his glory: 'Thus, Supreme Lord, unable to fathom your mystery, we wrangle and dispute about you. How could our common language ever acknowledge thy glory adequately, when even the Vedas have failed to do so? Verily, you are the In-dweller of the heartcave of every creature. Oh Thou all-pervading one, your divine birth and acts aim only at blessing thy devotees. Be pleased to bless us that we are not deluded by thy power of cosmic illusion. Ay, may we not be deluded by all that is seen and heard (by our illusory senses)'. The Lord blessed them all saying, `Amen!'

peepal

Once Lord Brahma said to sage Narada:"Divine Sage! Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and I ever reside in a peepal tree. All the deities inhabit its branches. The oceans exist in the twigs. All the sacred rivers dwell in the branches. Sacred cows, religious sacrifices (yagnas), the great sages and even the Vedas dwell in its tender leaves. The peepul tree which is so holy should be duly consecrated and worshipped.

24 births

"Once upon a time, sage Vaamadeva was wandering about in his supreme state of gnana,

immersed as he was in Brahmananda, quite detatched from all touch of worldliness. When he was

passing through a dense forest, a Brahmaraakshasa attacked him with the intent of devouring him.

The moment the latter touched the the sage's body he was uplifted from the miserable state of

existence and at once the memory of his previous existences dawned in him. So he bowed to the

sage and said:

"Swami, I was a king in one of my previous lives. Then I was blinded by pride of wealth and lust.

I enjoyed sex pleasures with all kinds of women - be they poor or rich and of every caste or social

status. The people of my land feared that their women were not safe in my realm and so migrated to

other parts of the land along with their families. I died after some time and suffered untold torments

in hell along with the spirits of my ancestors. When the sufferings I was due to experience with my

subtle body were through, I again took twenty four births on earth in different forms. The sequence of

my births was: a

  1. tiger,
  2. python,
  3. wolf,
  4. pig,
  5. dog,
  6. fox,
  7. stag,
  8. wild
  9. foul,
  10. monkey,
  11. mangoose,
  12. crow,
  13. bear,
  14. cock,
  15. cat,
  16. don
  17. key,
  18. frog,
  19. tortoise,
  20. fish,
  21. bandi
  22. koot,
  23. owl and
  24. elephant.
In my twenty fifth birth which is the present, I have become a Brahmaraakshasa. Having reaped the full

consequences of my evil acts, I have contacted you now and thereby gained this noble transformation.

The ancient saying 'The religious merit of seeing sages is great; that their touch is destructive of sin' is

now confirmed in my case. Now, noble Sir, please tell me, what is the cause of present transformation

and uplift ?" The sage replied, 'My son, owing to contact with the sacred ash on my body, you have

gained the knowledge of your previous existences. This ash was bestowed on me by Lord Shiva

Himself. The power of the holy ash is indeed unimaginable.

Seven Rebirths

Sree Guru beckoned to a low-born man who was passing that away, drew eight lines on his body with sacred ash and said, 'Tell me who you were!'. The man at once attained knowledge of his existence seven lives earlier and said: 'Lord,

  1. in the first of these lives, I was a hillman named Maatanga.
  2. In the second, I was a hunter named Raavana.
  3. In the third, I was named Gaangeya.
  4. In the fourth, I was a farmer.
  5. In the fifth, I was a caste-merchant named Somadatta.
  6. In the sixth life, I was a Kshatriya (ie., of the warrior caste) named Govardhana Varma.
  7. In the seventh, I was a brahmin and I had thoroughly learned the vedas and sastras (or sacred laws)'.
Then Sree Guru sprinkled sacred ash on his body and said, 'If you indeed were a vedic scholar, may you vanquish these brahmins in a scholarly debate!'  The visitors were amazed at and scared by this miracle and the power of the Master that could work it in a wink. They submitted to Sree Guru, sought his refuge and craved to be spiritually uplifted

Saraswati

‘Siva was the first Guru. Vishnu was his first disciple. Brahma was the disciple of Vishnu and henceforth the lineage went on like this: Brahma, Vasishta, Shakthi, Paraasara, Vedavyasa, Shuka, Gaudapaada, Govinda, Shankarabhagavatpaada, Viswarupa, Bohdhajnaani, Simhagiri, Iswara, Nrisimha, Vidyateertha, Sivateertha, Bhageeradhi Theertha, Vidyaranya, Malayaananda, Devateertha, Yaadavendra Saraswathi, Krishnaananda Saraswathi, who initiated Lord Nrisimha of our story into sannyasa. This Krishnaananda Saraswathi was ripe in age and wisdom. Hence Nrisimha resorted to him’

celibacy directly to the life of a sannyasa

I shall pass on from the state of celebacy directly to the life of a sannyasi. Thereby, I shall only confirm my perfection. Indeed, there is no nobler course than this to one who is endowed with discrimination. In this`age of Kali, the average span of life granted to man is a mere hundred years.

  1. Half of it is spent in sleep.
  2. Part of the rest is spent away in the ignorance of boy hood and the waywardness of youth.
  3. Another large chunk of it is frittered away in the service of the family and kinsfolk.
  4. The senility of old age gobbles up another portion of what little is left to him.
But, after all wealth, family ties and responsibilities are as unreal as a dream. Youth is transcient as a flower which soon withers. Thus life is very short when viewed in the light of the only purpose of it, i.e., Self-realization. The wheel of time destroys all forms of life, including the gods, relentlessly.

leg

Atri meets Brahma, Vishnu and Siva ~ Atri Muni performed severe austerities, standing on one leg for one hundred years, and practicing yogic breathing exercises. Due to these breathing exercises, a blazing fire came out of his head, and was seen by the three principal deities, Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Siva.

The three deities came to the hermitage of Atri Muni, accompanied by denizens of the heavenly planets. As soon as Atri Muni saw them, he became so pleased that he approached them on one leg, despite great difficulty.
